Either, though Tor is as slow as molasses.

I've PMed Sweet to double check that the browser (PC, but especially the phone) isn't auto-completing and thereby corrupting URL entry. Also responded to her Yahoo mail.

Also checked some global spam blacklists, but our host comes back as squeaky clean.

Next stage: I've prepped some screen clips on how to override provider's DNS. If that fails, yes, then we'll have to try one of the anti-Cameron solutions.
It's only 11.30 a.m. Central Time. I'll hold off a couple more hours for Sweet to get back on my PM before continuing (though I am prepped and ready).

Anything ongoing I'll communicate in this thread (Sweet knows that from my PM).

Thx for posting on this. Happy not to be alone!

THIS IS A HOW-TO GUIDE
Please do not quote, reply or action anything in this description until this header is in green, not red

Thx to Sweet and all the girls & boys already contributing, a lot of ground has been covered - possible specific browser issue, stale cookies, and much more beside.
Sweet may still yet report back (from a PM I sent her earlier) that the browser was auto-completing and corrupting URL entry, but that's a long shot, so I'm creating this doc now.

Purpose: to check if the internet service provider (ISP) is using a 'lookup service' (for tech speakers: DNS) which either has no entry for our hosting server or is deliberately blocking it.

I created the screen clips for this step-by-step guide from my Windows 7 machine, but apart from navigation to launch the black-box command prompt window, all the instructions should be the same for Windows 8 (my Win 8 reference system has been requisitioned by my mother, and she's 900 miles away). So as and when Sweet sees this, she may need someone's help on getting the process started under Windows 8 (most girls seem to be on Win 8).

First, we need to get a Windows command prompt window in administrator mode. (This is the bit which will look different under Win 8.)
From Start -> Accessories, move the mouse over the Command Prompt field, right click to unfold the selections, and then left click on Run as administrator - if you are challenged by Windows asking to the effect if that is what you really want: yes.
Attachment:
cmd_selector.jpg

The Administrator Command Prompt is opened (the prompt text may be different to what is shown here, that doesn't matter):
Attachment:
cmd_prompt.jpg

Now we'll check if your ISP is hiding the name of our sff hosting server.
Enter ping sff18.net46.net
If our server name is discoverable, you'll get replies like those shown here:
Attachment:
ping_sff18.jpg

If this is the case, it suggests the server can be seen, but the ISP is preventing web (http://) access. That means we'll need an 'anti-Cameron filter fix'-type solution, which Sandra and I will post separately. It also means you can stop here, and disregard the rest of these instructions.

If the server name can't be seen, you'll get timeout replies containing this:
Attachment:
maybe_invisible.jpg

But we can still check if the ISP is simply refusing the name lookup, or blocking completely.
Enter ping 31.170.162.123
If you get replies like this, we can continue:
Attachment:
ping_ip_address.jpg

If you see the Request time out replies, stop here (it's a case for the 'anti-Cameron filter fix').

If you've come so far, it means our sff server is reachable, but only in an anonymous kind of way. We'll try to fix that.
At the prompt enter netsh interface ip show config as shown here:
Attachment:
discover_adapter_names.jpg

Now comes the tricky bit. The screen is flooded by blocks of information about the network adapters in your PC. But the only information you need to get is the name in quotation marks of the PC connection to the internet. Depending on whether you are using wired LAN or wireless to your internet router, the name you need to note will be the same or very similar to one of the two I screen-clipped from my PC ("Local Area Connection" or "Wireless Network Connection"):

My PC uses the wired version ("Local Area Connection"). If you are using wireless, make the corresponding substition in the remaining instructions.

This is where we check where the PC is getting its internet address lookup (DNS) from.
Enter netsh interface ip show dnsservers name="Local Area Connection"
Chances are you'll that you will get the same response that I did i.e. DHCP shows in the answer (though the numeric part of the response will not be same as mine; that doesn't matter):
Attachment:
probably_auto_dns.jpg

This response means that your PC is using a server name lookup as provided by your ISP.
Now we'll tell your PC to use the Google service for this, not the one offered by your ISP. Whatever we might otherwise think of Google, their lookup service is comprehensive.
So enter netsh interface ip set dns name="Local Area Connection" source=static addr=8.8.8.8 register=none
Attachment:
set_to_google_dns.jpg

Let's just check that the change has been made.
Enter netsh interface ip show dnsservers name="Local Area Connection". You should see the 8.8.8.8 address of Google's lookup service:
Attachment:
check_is_google_dns.jpg

Now it's time to try getting sff18 to show in your browser. So launch a browser and enter sff18.net46.net as the site address.
If it works, great, you're done. Just close the command prompt window.

If it doesn't work, it means getting around a blocker/filter ('Cameron' syndrome). As mentioned before, Sandra and I will get back on that.
Also, if it doesn't work, restore the old name lookup service for the sake of good housekeeping:
netsh interface ip set dns name="Local Area Connection" source=dhcp register=none
Attachment:
reset_to_auto_dns.jpg

and then close the command prompt window.

That's a clear-cut result, so we'll have to go at it from the browser plugin angle.
It's 2.30 a.m. on my timezone; I'll pick it up, tomorrow.

Thx to Sweet for executing the tests.

Rather than clogging up your email, I am dropping in here to check up.
It appears that things are progressing forward. Even if it is slowly.
Any problems, email me.

Sweet, you are not talking to yourself! We are here, like Chris said some time ago - we hang out here with you and we will until you will be able to move to new Sff18.

And btw you are not alone with having a problem. i think Degris mentioned on the new forum that there is another member who has problem like yours. So for good and for not so good - you are not alone.

I was glad to see Kippi on Sff18 yesterday - I feared she somehow missed the info or worse - she couldn't get to the new site. But she made it. So will you - don't worry. And people over there in our new Sff home are talking about you. You will see when you will get there. And I'm sure that with help of CountryBoy you will!

Big bear hugs for you Sweet!

THIS IS A HOW-TO GUIDE FOR INSTALLING A FILTER BYPASS
Please do not quote, reply or action anything in this description until this header is in green, not red

Sandra has already mentioned the 'Go away Cameron' bypass tool for the Google Chrome browser.
The background was the UK administration's delirious notion that you can prevent the propagation of child pornography by beating up on the local telephone exchange, instead of ring-fencing the servers in far away countries, where the stuff comes from (the latter, of course, a political no-no).

So UK internet service providers (ISPs) are under pain of death to 'do something about the problem', and have introduced site access filters. The net result is that a load of bona fide health education sites, even government-sponsored ones, have been cut off. But that's a sad story for another day.

The Go away Cameron (GAC) bypass gets around the UK filters (in geekspeak, it tunnels though them). But in spite of its folksy UK name, it is a universal tool which can be used anywhere in the world to outsmart ISPs' restrictive practices. The technology itself is not new. Virtual Private Netwoks (VPNs) have been around for over 10 years. They are commonly needed by company employees working at home, because of corporate security requirements. So the ISPs are wary of trying to block them as well.

To subscribe privately to a VPN costs about $ 8 / month for a good one. Also, installing a VPN yourself on a PC requires trust, vigilance, and a geeky mindset. The GAC plugin for the Chrome browser is lightweigt, easy to install and configure, does not spread itself all over your Windows machine, and can be easily removed for whatever reason. The other side of the coin is that it's for the Chrome browser only, and it's free. So speed may not be heroic (though there is a GBP 1.99 / month sub which claims to offer stellar performance). Right now, we just need to see if we can get around a restrictive ISP; we can deal with speed another day.

I looked at a couple of other solutions, but they were either comparatively expensive (> $ 5/month), had vicious usage restrictions in the free version e.g. 4 hours/day, or were a highly intrusive installation on the PC.

So navigate your already installed Chrome browser to http://www.goawaycameron.co.uk

Well, lucky me, it's all set out on the GAC site landing page:
Attachment:
gac_home.jpg

First, register an account and then take a five minute coffee break (at any rate, that was the database delay on a Sunday afternoon). You don't need to give an email address for activation:
Attachment:
register.jpg

Attachment:
register_done.jpg

Click the FREE switch:
Attachment:

If you are the challenged by Chrome to agree to adding the plugin: yes, we'll add it.

You can log in your browser to the bypass service. You only need to do this once:
Attachment:
extension_login.jpg

The rest of the page mentions activating the incognito status, though on my trial run it was already activated.
Being a free registration, you'll see this. We can live with it:
Attachment:
constrained.jpg

The on-off toggle switch for the bypass is the flying athlete icon located top-right next to the address bar. Here shown in the on (UP) position:
Attachment:
on-off.jpg

Pls. try with sff18.net46.net and other sites and report back.
When not required for a particular site, it's a good idea to switch off; that saves a lot of speed-degrading internet 'jumps'.

Thx. :thankyou:
